Water & wastewater treatment

Water & wastewater treatment

wastewater treatment, also called sewage treatment, the removal of impurities from wastewater, or sewage, before it reaches aquifers or natural bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans. Since pure water is not found in nature (i.e., outside chemical laboratories), any distinction between clean water and polluted water depends on the type and concentration of impurities found in the water as well as on its intended use. In broad terms, water is said to be polluted when it contains enough impurities to make it unfit for a particular use, such as drinking, swimming, or fishing. Although water quality is affected by natural conditions, the word pollution usually implies human activity as the source of contamination. Water pollution, therefore, is caused primarily by the drainage of contaminated wastewater into surface water or groundwater, and wastewater treatment is a major element of water pollution control.

Lithium-Ion Batteries, beyond LIB’s

Lithium-ion batteries

New materials for advanced battery application Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been commercially used for powering portable electronic devices, but the industry is now facing challenges due to increasing demands on large-scale battery applications. It is still debatable if the availability of Li resources can meet these demands. The need for expensive cobalt in lithium cathodes is also problematic. In this respect, various rechargeable battery technologies have been investigated as alternative systems, including Na-ion, K-ion, and multivalent-ion (Mg, Ca, etc) batteries. Na, K, Mg, and Ca resources are much more earth-abundant than Li and thus they have lower prices. More importantly, those alternative rechargeable battery technologies do not necessarily use Co in cathodes, and there are many Co-free cathodes reported. Nevertheless, their electrochemical performance is still inferior to LIBs and needs to be improved.

Materials synthesis and characterization, scaled-up synthesis of battery materials

Materials synthesis and characterization

Since Li-ion batteries are the first choice source of portable electrochemical energy storage, improving their cost and performance can greatly expand their applications and enable new technologies which depend on energy storage. A great volume of research in Li-ion batteries has thus far been in electrode materials. Electrodes with higher rate capability, higher charge capacity, and (for cathodes) sufficiently high voltage can improve the energy and power densities of Li batteries and make them smaller and cheaper. However, this is only true assuming that the material itself is not too expensive or rare.

Nanostructured Materials (Nanocatalysts, Nanocomposites)

Nanostructured Materials (Nanocatalysts, Nanocomposites)

Nanomaterials are composed of structures at the nanoscale, usually achieved via specifically designed self-assembly processes. They gain unique electronic, optical, mechanical, magnetic, catalytic properties, which cannot be achieved without their nano-architecture. Such advanced nanomaterials provide unprecedented opportunities for tuning their properties in a very broad range. It is an actively developing field of modern research with a wide spectrum of applications ranging from nanoelectronics and energy harvesting to biology and nanomedicine. Advanced polymers and nanocomposites, battery materials and multifunctional materials, drug delivery and tissue engineering, bio-inspired and hybrid nanomaterials are just a few examples of research areas where advanced nanomaterials play an essential role.

Kinetic studies and Catalytic processes

Kinetic studies and Catalytic processes

Chemistry and chemical technology have been at the heart of the revolutionary developments of the 20th century. The chemical industry has a long history of combining theory (science) and practice (engineering) to create new and useful products. Worldwide, the process industry (which includes chemicals, petrochemicals, petroleum refining, and pharmaceuticals) is a huge, complex, and interconnected global business with an annual production value exceeding 4 trillion dollars. Although in industry special focus is in heterogeneous catalysis, homogeneous, enzymatic, photochemical and electrochemical catalysis should not be overlooked; as the major aim is to produce certain chemicals in the best possible way, applying those types of catalysis, which suit a particular process in the most optimal way. Catalysis according to the very definition of it deals with enhancement of reaction rates, that is, with catalytic kinetics.

Photocatalysis and Heterogeneous Catalysis

Photocatalysis and Heterogeneous Catalysis

The field of heterogeneous photocatalysis has expanded rapidly within the last four decades, having undergone various developments especially in relation to energy and the environment. It can be defined as the acceleration of photoreaction in the presence of a catalyst. The two most significant applications of photocatalysis have been in solar water splitting and the purification of air and water containing low concentrations of pollutants. The multidisciplinary nature of the field has also increased significantly and includes semiconductor physics, surface sciences, photo and physical chemistry, materials science and chemical engineering. Heterogeneous photocatalysis can be described as the acceleration of photoreaction in the presence of a catalyst. In the contexts of history and research, interest in heterogeneous photocatalysis can be traced back to many decades when Fujishima and Honda discovered in 1972 the photochemical splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of TiO2 From this time, extensive research, much of it published, has been carried out to produce hydrogen from water in oxidation-reduction reactions using a variety of semiconductor catalyst materials.

Semiconductors and Surface Science

Semiconductors and Surface Science

The study of semiconductor surface structure and surface chemistry was actually begun several decades ago together with the advent of surface analytical techniques. Many of the earliest surface science studies examined semiconductors. With the rapid proliferation of semiconductor-based technologies, studies of semiconductor surface chemistry have also grown, and current literature contains more than a thousand publications each year on the structure, adsorption, and reaction of single-crystalline semiconductor surfaces.
